Today I got a call from a teacher saying that all of the sudden they were unable to type in Word 2013. I tried a repair but that didn't work. Uninstalled 2013 and installed 2016. Same issue.
SOLUTION: Open Word -- File>Options>Addins> Disable Smart Ink.
